Ralph Winn asked:

In an unpredictable world, home surveillance is absolutely critical for keeping you and your family safe. A home surveillance system eliminates blind spots to protect the most vulnerable places on your property. For one Houston family, their home surveillance system went beyond just protecting their home and personal safety. After a break-in, they decided to install a home surveillance system. Their surveillance cameras caught a group of teenagers trying to break into a neighbor’s house, and the footage was later used to help identify the suspects.

Advantages of Home Surveillance Systems

You might feel safe in your home because you already have a burglar alarm. While simple alarms are a good way to protect your home and family, home surveillance systems can do so much more.

1. Unlike an alarm, a complete home surveillance system is nearly impossible to disarm.

2. Alarms sound during or after a break-in, but a home surveillance system alerts you as soon as it detects unauthorized motion to prevent break-ins.

3. Video surveillance of your property will help identify and apprehend guilty parties.

Home Surveillance Technology

In as little as 15 minutes, you and your family can enjoy the security of a home surveillance system. Your system could include:

•	Night vision recording - Even in complete darkness, your cameras record viewable footage. So whether it’s a sunny morning or a stormy night, your house will be secure.

•	Automatic recycling storage - Your system automatically records over the oldest footage for efficient video storage.

•	Email or cell phone motion alerts - When your home surveillance system detects motion on your property, it sends you a message via phone or computer so you are constantly aware of the safety of your home.

•	Motion detector recording - You conserve hard drive space by recording only when something is happening. This allows you to record more on a smaller sized hard drive and eliminates the old-fashioned notion of searching through hours of footage to find a few minutes of action.

•	Remote viewing of security footage - Using a broadband Internet connection, you can monitor your home in real time even on vacation. Relax and enjoy your time away from home with the peace of mind that comes with being able to watch live or recorded video surveillance footage from your PC, laptop, or PDA.

Protect What Matters Most

Instead of trying to secure every aspect of your house separately, you can implement a comprehensive home security plan that guards your entire property at once. Home surveillance systems make it easy and affordable to get involved in the protection of your family and home. Nothing is more important than protecting the ones you love. Through home surveillance you can keep a watchful eye on the things that matter most to you, no matter where you are.

DANIEL

Ryan Temple asked:

Choosing the correct surveillance system for your security needs can be a difficult task. If you plan on going it alone, here are a few tips from the Surveillance Professionals at PCSurveillance.

DVR dvr-pc-val16-2

-How many surveillance cameras do you plan on initially installing? Do you anticipate future needs to add additional cameras? Customers who do not plan upfront pay more in the end!

-What type of video quality do you need? Real time video is 30 frames per second, however your eyes and brain can only comprehend about 24 frames per second. Video playback does not start to get “choppy” until it reaches around 7.5 frames per second.

-How long do you need to store your video? Video storage can add up quick if you are recording 24/7. We advise customers to use motion recording when possible to save on storage costs. There is no correct answer when it comes to video storage, each project must be looked at independently.

-Hardware compression vs. Software compression DVR Cards? Hardware boards are more expensive, however they do not strain the CPU as much because all of the compression is done on the DVR card. Software compression although less expensive, relies on the CPU to compress video. Hardware DVR cards also offer more channels of audio.

Cameras cm-sb550dv-2t

-Outside surveillance cameras. Do you need LED (infrared cameras)? Are you in an area with cold weather, you may need to consider a heated housing? What distance do you need to see? Should you consider a License Plate Camera? Are the cameras within reach of the public, then you may want to make sure you have a vandal proof camera.

-Inside surveillance cameras. If you have low light situations, consider a day/night, low lux (.01 or lower), or LED surveillance camera. For areas with bright light or glare choose a WDR (wide dynamic range) camera. The WDR camera will eliminate glare allowing you to see a clear picture.

-Lens options need to be taken into consideration also. Think through the distance you want to see and will that view ever change? If so think about purchasing a camera with a vari-focal lens.

Wire cb-sc100-1

-How long will your wire runs be? If you have long runs of wire (1,000’ plus), you might want to consider going with cat5. However you will need to run power separate or Poe (Power over Ethernet) into a Poe switch. If you have shorter runs of wire going with Siamese Coax Cable will be more effective.

Power Supply pw-12v16hp-11

-There are several ways to power your surveillance cameras. Traditionally most applications use a Power Supply Box that can power multiple surveillance cameras or will use individual Power Supplies plugged in at each camera. If you are use IP (internet protocol) cameras you can run Poe (Power over Ethernet) into a Poe enabled switch. Whatever you use, think about the location of the power supply.

Don’t get stuck with a surveillance system that doesn’t work. The key when purchasing surveillance equipment is preparation and asking the right questions at the beginning of the process. If you can’t use your surveillance system to prosecute a theft or crime, then your system has failed!

AHMAD

Glenn Freiboth asked:

Tomorrow’s surveillance technology may be considerably more effective. But each improvement in technology will typically come at the cost of more intrusion into the privacy of ordinary citizens. The public in general seems unaware of the goals of scientists around the world who have been intensifying their efforts to perfect the art of surveillance, hoping to catch criminals and terrorists before they strike.

Research laboratories foresee tools that could identify and track just about every person, anywhere and sound alarms when the systems encounter hazardous devices or chemical compounds. Many of these ideas stem from the annals of science fiction. For example, an artificial nose in doorways and corridors sniffs out faint traces of explosives on someone’s hair. Tiny sensors floating in reservoirs detect a deadly microbe and radio a warning. Smart cameras “finger” people at a distance by the way they walk or by the shape of their nose. Chemical lab’s analyzes the sweat, body odor, and skin flakes in the human thermal plume which represents the halo of heat that surrounds each person.

Consumer demand for video and audio surveillance products is speeding their development by lowering the cost of the underlying technologies. Camera phones, nanny cams, and even satellite photos are commonplace and can be found everywhere. Human sensors are flooding into households in the form of tests for HIV, pregnancy, and diabetes some of which can relay data to a doctor and soon there will be far more sensitive DNA-based tests to be even more accurate matching than ever. Groups are working on radio-frequency identification (RFID) tags. These surveillance tags are sold in stores to help track inventory, and 50 people in the U.S. have had them planted under their skin to broadcast their ID and medical data, in case of an emergency.

These developments portray a high-tech surveillance camera society that could not have even been imagined by science fiction writer George Orwell, a world in which virtually every advance brings benefits as well as personal intrusions. Rapid DNA-based probes, for example, could help protect us from bioweapons and diagnose diseases, but they might also reveal far too much about us to health insurers or prospective employers. The trade-offs are not pleasant, in part, because big corporations and governments will continue to wield the most advanced surveillance systems. But also, ordinary people will also gain capabilities to monitor their home and surroundings with these advance consumer technologies, from Web cams to Internet search and tracking tools, allowing them to watch and be watched from every perspective.

Here’s an example of what could happen in society: A subway commuter posted on the Internet some cell-phone photos he took of a passenger who had refused to clean up after her cat relieved itself during the ride. In no time, a vigilante mob on the Internet identified her by her face and the purse she was carrying, and she became the object of national vilification.

If terrorism becomes pandemic in Europe and America, emerging surveillance tools may be abused in even more bizarre ways. At the same time, the overhead burdens of a police state could impose crippling costs on a free-market economy. Witness the U.S. clampdown on foreign student visas, which could end up crimping a universities ability to do advanced research.

Industry experts disagree about when the most advanced tools to thwart terrorist acts will arrive on the market and whether they will even deliver what they promise. Sensors that can detect bombs, radiation, and toxins exist today, and will be far more sophisticated a decade from now. But strewing them across every city in America would cost untold billions of dollars. High-tech electronic eavesdropping on communications networks can be effective, but only if terrorists use telecom systems. But even with the latest improvements in spy cameras, biometric devices such as iris scans, bomb sniffers, and tracking software, it will be many years before they can pick a terrorist out of a crowd and stop him before he commits his terrorist acts. Sacrifices in society and in governments will be made as our society becomes a surveillance society. The debate will rage on for decades to come.

The Ultimate Universal Sensor, a small and cheap enough to scatter in public places, and smart enough to sniff out anything that comes its way, without being preprogrammed to find specific molecules. Nobody is close to reaching that goal yet, but Sandia National Laboratories has designed a lab-on-a-chip that detects a variety of both chemical and biological agents. It has skinny micro channels etched in its surface. When a gas or liquid moves through the tiny pipes, it collides with special material, and how much that slows the flow betrays the identity of the fluid. Sandia is now developing this technology to monitor the Contra Costa County (Calif.) water supply.

These systems may not be in place in time for the next attack in a Western country let alone in Egypt or Iraq but if terrorists hit the U.S. again, the authorities are bound to strike back. Among other things, today’s restraints on racial profiling are likely to crumble. Then what will we do? In the arms race against the terrorist ******* bombers, will surveillance technologies prove their worth?

Some governments have already used Electronic Monitoring to foil some terrorist plots, and portals that spot guns and explosives make airports safer. Unfortunately, many of the most powerful technologies are simply too new. It may take a decade or more before networks of biochemical sensors are ready to blanket a whole city. And it could take as long before camera systems can pick a known face terrorist or otherwise out of the crowds. For now, only a combination of electronic monitoring and human intelligence stands a chance of holding radicals at bay.

In the meantime, scientists who labor on surveillance prototypes are encouraged that their innovations can bring benefits in health care and food safety. Over time, people may get smarter about how to live with threats and make use of technology without undermining their most basic values. A country that sacrifices its citizens’ freedom in the fight to protect them is no hero.

ELMER

Mark Allen asked:

If you’re in the market for an IP-based video surveillance system, you’re going to need to know exactly what it is you are looking for, and at. There are a raft of technical terms and the like that you’ll have to be aware of. As there is no one definition on what IP-based actually means, let alone other terms like networked or web-based, you are going to encounter as many different explanations as there are salespeople.

At first, video surveillance was all done with analog technologies like CCTV (closed circuit TV), the video being stored on tape. While perfectly adequate for monitoring and recording activity, no broadcast capabilities were present. This made the technology less than ideal for remote surveillance. And of course, tapes involved an inherent time lag. Worse of all, tapes had to be changed on a regular basis, and the quality of captured video tended to be rather poor.

Digital revolutionizes video surveillance

With the advent of the Internet, and increasing prevalence of LANs (Local Area Networks), there was a parallel leap in surveillance technology in the nineties. Analog cameras began to be phased out in favor of digital cameras, the prices of which dropped to within the realm of feasibility for the average person.

With these advances, video surveillance could now be sent out live over the Internet or a local area network. The new digital cameras offered much higher quality, clearer images, which were also far easier to work with. This was a boon to law enforcement in particular.

The basics of IP-based surveillance

In a nutshell, the digital camera “sees” what it is pointed at, and sends the video data over a local area network to a workstation or server. The server or workstation then handles the data. As needed, the data is displayed, recorder or retransmitted to other computers and networks.

There is software available for data analysis, flagging and almost any other data management function you could want. Video surveillance is a more versatile tool than ever thanks to these accompanying advances in software.

Truly IP-based digital surveillance utilizes CCD (digital to you and me) cameras that break up the video data into packets and stream it over the local area network via an Ethernet (Cat 5) cable instead of a coaxial cable. This allows more bandwidth and true TCP/IP capabilities to be dedicated to the video signal.

IP-based surveillance allows better data mining and retrieval, as well as encryption capabilities for your data in the event you need to keep it away from prying eyes and tampering. This is something which analog based surveillance simply cannot offer.

A new development is digital cameras that have built in web servers, meaning no networked computers are required to run the cameras, the video data is sent to the end location for viewing or recording to be played back later. D-Link and Linksys already have offerings on the market already, with many more to follow.

Halfway there

In between the digital and analog worlds is adding a DVR, or digital video recorder to an existing surveillance system. While not IP-based, a DVR system is a step towards such a system. Now, a DVR system may have the same camera and other older analog technologies in place, but stores video on DVR rather than tape. Unfortunately, the poor video quality of the old analog based systems still is a problem here.

If you’re looking at surveillance systems, always ask if digital refers to the recording medium or the cameras. Many companies will call a system digital based on the DVR storage alone, while still using analog cameras.

bash: If: command not found

perior to analog

IP-base recording is highly compressed for easier storage and can be transported over a variety of media

Digital images can be encrypted for security purposes

Updates and add-ons are relatively inexpensive through software packages and Internet computer networking

Adjustable frame rates

Remote or shared viewing may be done over the Internet or a wireless connection

Standard IP video compression techniques are used

IP surveillance cameras may be added individually or in groups according to your needs

If you plan to increase or upgrade video surveillance for your company or home, having a handle on how IP-based video surveillance works will make your decision easier. Video surveillance is headed in this direction; although in the short term it may be a little bit pricier, is an investment in superior quality and flexibility over the long run.

ALVARO
