daniel kneitel asked:

Video Cassette Recording (VCR)

Today, security camera system may consist of many different products and technologies. Many suppliers build pieces of the system, whether it is part of a hybrid analog/digital implementation or an end-to-end networked IP solution. The following sections explain the evolution of the CCTV system, starting with a fully analog system and adding components until it achieves networked capability.

A traditional analog surveillance system consists of analog cameras, time-lapse VCRs and monitors. A coaxial cable runs from each camera to a multiplexing device, which allows multiple cameras recording to one VCR, with a monitor for viewing. The time-lapse VCR allows the operator to adjust when the VCR records so the standard two-hour VHS tapes can he used for much longer. The trade-off results in lower-quality images in return for less frequent tape changes or image overwriting.

Analog CCTV recording systems have been the basis surveillance and monitoring for the past twenty years .This technology is extremely old and outdated and is rapidly being replaced by digital recording technology which now represents over 80% of all new installations.

Digital Video Recording (DVR)

A DVR is a computer with a special video graphics card that connects it to an analog camera via 75-ohm coaxial cable. The card also converts the analog signal to a digital signal and compresses the resulting image so it can be stored on an internal hard drive, viewed or transported across a network. DVRs typically utilize a computer operating system such as Windows or Linux along with video management System (VMS) software. DVRs are controlled and accessed via keyboards, mice and external monitors in order to setup, run surveillance software and replay stored video. DVRs usually have an internal Ethernet connection for LAN or WAN attachments.

Network-Attached Digital Video Recorder (NDVR)

A Network-attached Digital Video Recorder is part PC and part “Network Appliance” A NDVR is very similar to a DVR and is sometimes called a “Network Appliance” because it does not require-attached keyboard, mouse or video monitor. The device is plugged directly into an Ethernet switch and the only way to access the device is through the network. The device still has an operating system but it resides in firmware burned into a chip on the motherboard. Most of these NDVRs rely on Video Management Software (VMS) loaded on a network-attached client PC, however some have it ‘embedded’ in another motherboard chip, where it can be accessed from any PC through an Internet Browser. Most of these products have internal hard drives for local video file storage, but they can be inter-connected with Direct Attached Storage Arrays (DAS), Network Attached Storage (NAS) equipment or Storage Area Networks (SANs) through the LAN or WAN.

Network Video Recorders (NVR)

The ‘pure’ Network Video Recorder (NVR) is not a “turn-key box” or network appliance, but created with a combination of network devices. An NVR can be a standard network server with internal or attached storage capability along with recording software, video surveillance system or communication software and possibly even intelligent video analysis software. Digitization of the analog video is done by a separate ‘Video Encoder’ or ‘Video Server’ which is also attached to the Ethernet/IP network. Using an NVR configuration, true IP cameras can act as Video Servers and input images directly to the NVR and be managed directly by the NVR video software.

Video Encoders & Decoders

Encoders are used to take video signals in analog or digital form and make them suitable for transmission where bandwidth or storage capacity is an issue. Encoding applies to many video surveillance system applications where digital recording devices are used or viewing across a network is desired. Analog signals must first be converted to a digital format, but then each source must be compressed into a smaller size file or video “stream.” There are several standards for encoding/decoding and compression; each has advantages and disadvantages. Typically the trade-offs are quality for reduced file size.

A decoder is a device that does the reverse of an encoder, undoing the encoding so that the original information can be retrieved. The same method used to encode is usually just reversed in order to decode. These are still relatively simple devices which can be a software program running on a PC, a DVD player or even a cell phone. They may also be hardware devices that take the digital video format and convert it back into an analog signal that can be displayed on a TV monitor. This allows the networked video to become switched across any output device. Usually the decoding and encoding functions reside in the same device and is commonly referred to as a “codec,” an acronym for code/decode.

Migration to a Digital Network Solution

Because there is significant financial investment in analog CCTV, many security managers opt for a phased transition to IP, blending both analog and digital security technologies wherever possible during the migration. Integrating existing analog equipment with products that provide the functionality of a digital system offers several benefits:

Remote accessibility

Cost-effectiveness

Flexibility

Scalability

In the simple illustration below, the analog cameras are connected to an analog video switcher, an analog monitor, a VCR and a video server. This traditional setup provides sequential monitoring and recording of multiple analog cameras. By connecting a video server to convert the analog video into digital data, images can be sent over an Ethernet/IP network (through a router/switch) which provides Ethernet connections for networked IP cameras. With this configuration, authorized security personnel in local or remote locations can view video originating from both analog and digital, networked IPcameras.

In the transition from analog to digital surveillance systems, no system is too small or too tightly tied to analog technology not to benefit from some measure of digital technology.

In conclusion the migration of a Digital Network Solution to your existing Analogy System can be done and still have the capability to add the latest software and hardware.

Some of the latest in security surveillance system software is the Dual Sensor as listed below in more detail.

The latest camera systems would be a combanation of network camera and high end analogy cameras.

ANTONIO

Abhishek Agarwal asked:

Before you rush out and buy a bunch of new equipment to upgrade your home security system, you should know about your options and the types of equipment you’ll want to consider. Home security surveillance options include cameras, monitors, and recording devices.

You can find a wide range of cameras for a wide range of prices from around $100 to over $1000. Clearly, it depends on what you want the camera to do. Monitors come in many sizes and prices as well. You can choose a small desktop monitor for as little as $50 or a well-equipped multi-feature monitor for over $1000. For recording the images, you can purchase a standard DVR or VCR. Vendors sell packages that contain all of this equipment with necessary accessories starting at around $1000. Of course, you can add on lots of neat high-tech bells and whistles.

The camera is the single most important part of your home surveillance security system. Most experts recommend that home security surveillance systems use hidden cameras. They are small and easy to install almost anywhere. Some cameras already come in their own camouflage outfits - plants, toys, clocks. Others come in easy-to-spot but hard-to-damage housing.

No matter how you choose to hide it, you must be careful that its range is clear from obstruction and, of course, the camera quality provides a clear image. Of course, hard-wired cameras are harder to hide and harder to install. You’ll usually need to hire someone to do your installation. If you decide to add a hard-wired camera later, you can end up with a big mess and high costs.

Web cams are a favorite device for home surveillance security systems. They are small and inexpensive, and they can be used for different purposes as well. However, it may be hard to install a webcam that uses a USB cord - better to look for a wireless webcam.

The camera lens will determine how large an area you can cover and what lighting conditions are needed. You can get a dome-shaped wide-angle lens to get distortion-free images and a larger field than with most standard camera lenses. You can also find cameras that will pick up images in low light, but infrared cameras are required if you want to monitor in darkness.

Wireless cameras are easy to find. They are an excellent choice for home surveillance security systems because they can be installed almost anywhere without the hassle of using long cables or wires to connect them. They’re easy to install and easy to use.

The great thing is that you can use as many cameras as you need (up to at least 16) to cover every vulnerable area in your home and yard. With the added capability to record images, you have the ability to help law enforcement capture and prosecute any criminal who enters your property.

Your choices of monitors are many. You can use cell phones, regular televisions, your computer, or a special desktop system monitor. This offers you a way to save money when you must. Your monitor allows you to observe activity as it happens, especially helpful if you want to use your system to monitor you baby in the nursery or your pets outside. Keep in mind that, without recording equipment, the monitor must be manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week if your home security surveillance system is to be effective.

A recording device is recommended for any home security surveillance system. It gives you the ability to follow up on break-ins after they’ve happened providing evidence of the crime to law enforcement as they search for, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrator. They can even be used as evidence in court. Home security surveillance systems do not really prevent break-ins, but they do help retrieve stolen items and catch the crook. And they’re a great toy for techies.

A digital video recorder (DVR) lets you record longer and offers more recording and viewing options than standard VCRs can. You can also view the recorded DVDs on the internet as well as on your monitor or television. But a standard VCR will give you an acceptable recorded image of the event if you need to give it to police. Let your budget determine your choice of recording equipment.

As you might expect, the newer systems in the market allow for a variety of accessories and add-ons to make the most tech-savvy homeowner squeal with joy. You can add sensors that start the recorder when they detect motion or temperature changes. Light sensors can help you know when to adjust camera settings or provide more artificial light. And smoke detection sensors add to your home protection capabilities.

If you’re serious about getting a home security surveillance system, you should do your homework. Learn as much as you can through the internet, then make a thorough list of your needs. Prepare a map or other description of the areas you want to monitor, then take your information to a qualified expert for a free security assessment. Many local surveillance and security companies have assessment sheets you can fill out to help you be sure you’ve covered all the bases and decide what system and components best meet your needs.

The number and size of areas you want to monitor, conditions like light and weatherproofing, and budget will be your major constraints. And if you decide to use a subscription monitoring service, you’ll need to select the best one who can provide dependable, quick responses and outstanding service.

Due to the introduction of video, most of the large and popular security monitoring companies will charge large fees. They may even ask you to sign a long-term contract. But there are younger companies out there who offer lower prices. Price, however, shouldn’t be the deciding factor. You’ll need to check out a new company’s performance record and recommendations before signing on with them.

Home security surveillance is a new, booming industry, and it’s a good way to ensure that you get to keep even those possessions that are been stolen. It’s helpful to use for other purposes (like watching the baby), and there are a wide variety of equipment and configuration options. You can stay as simple as using a webcam and your laptop, or you can get as sophisticated as installing a integrated system with top-of-the-line electronics and lots of add-ons.

What you decide depends on why you need a home security surveillance system and what you can afford to spend to get the results you want. We recommend that you do a lot of research on equipment capabilities, do a comprehensive analysis of your home and surveillance needs, talk to people who already have a home security surveillance system, and get as much advice and support as you can from experts in the field. After you’ve done these things, you can be sure to get the perfect home security surveillance system for your unique needs.

DANNIE

Simon Birch asked:

Overview of Philippine Investigation Services

For anyone with experience with Philippine relationships, the idea of relationship fraud, scams or cheating is probably nothing new. That’s not to say that all Philippine relationships are doomed. Rather, with the number of relationships being initiated over the internet, coupled with the widely booming industry of dating scams in the Philippines, one cannot be too careful.

So who does one call if he or she needs competent surveillance in the Philippines? What services are available to confirm your suspicions regarding your distant wife, girlfriend, husband or lover? How can one obtain the evidence necessary to move forward, or move out of the relationship? There are several major competitors in the Philippines who offer confidential surveillance, but the quality of services offered varies significantly.

Of the investigative firms offering surveillance, we recommend going with a European or American owned company. The difference is in the quality of investigation, accountability, reporting and general customer service. The best of the foreign owned firms operating in the Philippines is probably Philippine PI, a subsidiary of Wymoo International. Philippine PI is U.S. owned and operated. The firm is known for its good coverage on the islands, discreet service and competitive pricing. Competition is fierce in the Philippines, but as of 2006 and 2007, the group led the private investigation industry in client satisfaction.

Surveillance services often include daily reports, photographic evidence and investigation notes. The service can be expensive, but the information uncovered is often the piece of mind to move forward or pull out of a relationship. A typical surveillance case may be between 3 and 5 days, although each case is unique and requires special attention by your investigator.

All the Best,

S.
Maggie asked:

If you have a surveillance camera that has a microphone hooked up in your own home for not only surveillance but as a webcam (meaning it can be accessed through the internet if you have all the passwords etc.). Is there anything illegal about that since it is recording non-stop? We have it in our basement/den because we usually keep our garages open in the summer and a flimsy door won’t stop someone from breaking in but it also records everything else that occurs in our basement/ den area including the going abouts of the family and any guests who come over. Is there anything illegal about that? I am pretty sure there is not since it is our own home but this is to settle a bet with a friend. Thanks!
Most of our frequent guests and family know about it and it’s difficult to turn it off and then reboot everything all over again. But they are aware of it and think it’s a good idea.

ARTURO

Adam Sanders asked:

Peace of mind is an important aspect in the life of most people. Who on earth wants to have sleepless nights worrying about whether or not you are safe in your own home? Being put into this type of mind frame is not only stressful, but physically unhealthy. Stress and everyday problems are inevitable, but there are of course measures people can employ beforehand to prevent an anticipated problem from occurring. One major concern today is security. Security equals peace of mind. Peace of mind, in turn, means limited levels of stress.

Security can be in the form of a simple street lamp post. As they say, light is the cheapest form of security. We only fear what we can’t see, right? A well lit environment gives us a sense of security and allows us to see all of those dim areas that we aren’t quite comfortable with.

Insurance could be another form of security. It could spare us from worrying too much about damaged property or expensive hospital bills. Security is one of the most vital components of our everyday life. Security helps us attend to our daily commitments promptly and enables us to function well in whatever roles we play in our homes, workplaces and communities.

Over time, as we turn into adults, we acquire properties that are essential to our chosen lifestyle. We make sure that our possessions are well-kept at all times. However, there are instances that we have to deal with other people breaking into our properties or destroying them. In as much as we want to guard our properties or belongings 24/7, we cannot do so since we have appointments or responsibilities to attend to. So, how can we assure ourselves that our properties are secured?

Surveillance equipment, like surveillance cameras, is one of the most crime preventative pieces of equipment on the market today. Surveillance cameras are a security tool that people can employ to ensure protection in their own homes or other establishments (i.e. workplace, educational institutions, etc.). Since cameras offer recording, tracking and video capture capabilities, they easily serve as a warning to any suspicious behavior that strangers exhibit. In this way, homeowners for instance, can call help immediately. On the other hand, having a tracking feature, surveillance cameras can monitor any activities that occur in a certain place.

Surveillance cameras are primarily used for tracking or security purposes. For instance, in grocery stores or shopping malls, through the images that are recorded in the surveillance cameras, store owners can establish forecasts regarding customer traffic in certain seasons of the year. This data will in turn be input into other higher business analysis.

In the same manner, people who are handling road traffic can utilize surveillance cameras in the management of road traffic. Through the data collected and stored in the cameras, they will know where heavy traffic is most frequent and what road is often congested. Aside from these, traffic enforcers are also able to track traffic violations.

The purpose of surveillance cameras has evolved over time. They are not just a simple gadget attached on the walls of our houses or offices, but more a watchful eye when we cannot observe events for ourselves.

ENOCH
